Smoke
Outlook: Umpqua North/High Cascades
Complex
Issued for: Wednesday
30, 2017
Air
Resource Advisor: Jen Croft, Aaron Wilkerson (T)
Fire
Activity: High Cascades is reported at 22,692 acres. Umpqua North
is reported at 20,924. The Happy Dog fire is now the biggest threat to several
communities: 2 miles southwest and 3 miles northwest of Soda Springs;
2.5 miles southwest of Slide Creek; and 5 miles west of Toketee Ranger
Station. Lines are being constructed to prevent this spread from impacting
powerlines and highway 138. Burnouts are likely to begin within the next 24
hours. Hot weather, low humidity, and dense smoke are impeding
efforts and there have been no opportunities for air support due to poor
visibility.
Wednesdays weather is expected to increase
acreage on all uncontrolled fires and contribute to widespread unhealthy air
quality within the region.
Smoke:
Winds
will start out fairly light from the NE to SE direction. By afternoon they will shift W to NW with
gusts developing by late afternoon, especially over higher terrain. This will push smoke east and again greatly impact the Rogue
Valley, Cascades and communities along the east side of the Cascades. These
westerly winds may provide some relief to Roseburg, Glide and Medford.
*The Oregon Department of Environmental
Quality has issued an Air Quality Alert in and around the outlook area and is
in effect until further notice. Wildfires burning in the region combined with
forecast conditions will cause air quality levels to fluctuate and could be
at unhealthy
levels.
